Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: Features, Improvements, and Pricing

Design and Build: A Step Towards Regular Phones 📱

One of the most striking aspects of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is its new design. I've experienced every generation of the Galaxy Z Fold, and I can confidently say that Samsung has accomplished its mission of making the Z Fold feel more like a regular phone when closed. Several factors contribute to this, such as the lighter design, the less noticeable crease, and the new larger cover screen with more symmetrical borders.

A Lighter and More Symmetrical Design ⚖️

This new model is significantly lighter than its predecessor, making it easier and more natural to use. The screen size has also seen a slight increase, now measuring at 6.3 inches compared to the previous 6.2 inches. Moreover, the borders framing the screen are more symmetrical, giving it a more balanced look. In fact, when viewed from the front, you might not even realize it’s a foldable phone. This focus on a more streamlined design aligns perfectly with Samsung's goal of offering a phone that doesn’t feel like a foldable device but functions as one.

Improved Hinge and Display Layers 🔄

Samsung has also improved the hinge slightly and introduced new layers in the display that make the crease less noticeable. While the crease is still visible under certain lighting conditions, it’s far less intrusive. When scrolling across the display, I barely felt it, which is a significant improvement over previous models.

AI Features: Fun but Not Foldable-Specific 🤖

Samsung has introduced a few new AI features on the Galaxy Z Fold 6. These features are fun to play around with, although they don’t feel specifically tailored for foldable phones.

Sketch to Image and Portrait Studio 🎨

Two notable features are the Sketch to Image and Portrait Studio modes. As the name suggests, Sketch to Image creates an image based on your rough drawing. For instance, I attempted to sketch the Eiffel Tower with a few curved lines, and the AI managed to recognize what I was drawing. However, the results were sometimes inconsistent. In one instance, I drew a hat on a photo of my cat, but the AI replaced it with a book instead. Portrait Studio, on the other hand, takes an image of a person and stylizes it into different art forms, such as watercolor or sketch. These features are entertaining but might not be exceptionally useful in day-to-day life. Nevertheless, they add a layer of creativity to the device.

Conversation Mode in Interpreter App 🌐

One feature that does utilize both the inner and outer screens effectively is the new Conversation Mode in the Interpreter app. It showcases what I’m saying in Spanish on the outer screen, and my friend’s Spanish response is displayed in English on the screen facing me. However, the translation speed wasn’t as instantaneous as I expected, leading to delayed conversations. This feature will likely improve with time and updates, but currently, it doesn’t fully meet expectations.

Camera Capabilities 📸

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 boasts a versatile camera setup. It includes a 50-megapixel main camera, a 10-megapixel telephoto camera, and a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera that has a new sensor designed for better low-light performance.

Low Light Performance 🌙

I tested the new ultrawide camera against last year’s model in a dim underground tunnel. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 captured brighter and more detailed photos, proving its improved low-light capabilities. However, the overall camera system remains similar to what we've seen in other Samsung flagship phones.

Color Punch and Comparison with Competitors 🎨

The camera system tends to punch up the colors, making photos more vibrant. This trait worked in the phone's favor when compared to competitors like the Google Pixel Fold and OnePlus Open. In most cases, I preferred Samsung’s photos due to their lively colors. However, the Pixel Fold still excels in certain aspects, like ultrawide shots and low-light photos.

Inside Selfie Camera 🤳

Inside the phone, there’s a 4-megapixel selfie camera. This is a low resolution compared to modern standards, but Samsung's post-processing software manages to mitigate a lot of the noise typically associated with low-res cameras.

Battery Life: Sufficient but Variable 🔋

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 offers decent battery life, which should be enough to last through a busy day. However, battery performance varies depending on usage patterns.

Inner vs. Outer Screen Usage 🖥️

During lighter use, primarily on the outer screen, I found that the battery lasted up to 15 hours with around 35% to 38% battery left at the end of the day. But on days when I had to frequently use the inside screen and increase brightness for outdoor use, the battery drained faster, dropping to around 20% to 30% after 14 hours.

Performance: Smooth and Fast 🚀

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, which has been optimized for Samsung's Galaxy phones. This is the same chip found in the Galaxy S24 series, so performance is as expected – fast and seamless.

Handling Multitasking Effortlessly 🔄

Whether multitasking, using split-screen mode, gaming, or processing photos, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 does it all without breaking a sweat. I haven’t noticed any lag or stutter, which is exactly what you’d expect from a phone of this price point.

What I Like and Dislike: The Final Verdict ⚖️

Pros 👍

  • New Cover Screen: The slightly larger display area and more symmetrical design make it look and feel more like a regular phone.
  • Software Updates: Samsung promises 7 years of software updates for this phone, which is excellent for longevity.
  • Ultrawide Camera: The new sensor lives up to its promise, offering better low-light performance.
  • Lighter Design: The weight reduction makes it significantly easier to handle daily.
  • Cons 👎

  • Price Increase: The $100 price increase is tough to justify, especially when considering market accessibility.
  • Battery Life: While decent, there’s no significant improvement in battery life or charging speeds.
  • AI Features: Most new AI features don’t seem specifically tailored for foldable phones and could easily be implemented on other Galaxy models.
  • Conclusion: A Mixed Bag 🎭

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 offers a mix of improvements and areas that need refinement. Its new design and improved ultrawide camera are welcome upgrades. However, the higher price and lack of significant advancements in battery life and AI features tailored for foldables make it less accessible for the average user. If you're a fan of cutting-edge tech with a big budget, this phone might be for you. Otherwise, it may be worth waiting for future iterations that hopefully address some of these drawbacks while building on the strengths of the Galaxy Z Fold 6.
