Discover the Charm: Exploring the Most Beautiful Small Towns in Europe

When planning a vacation to Europe, the bustling cities of Paris, London, or Rome might be the first destinations that come to mind. Each of these metropolises is incredible, but they are far from everything Europe has to offer. By exploring some of the smaller towns across the continent, you can see a more authentic, traditional side of Europe. If you’re planning an upcoming getaway to the continent, here are just a few of the most beautiful small towns in Europe.

Castelluccio 🌼

Perched atop a steep hill 5,000 feet above sea level, Castelluccio is the highest village in the Apennine Mountain Range. Known for its fabulous lentils, the village comes alive from May through July when the fields bloom with brightly colored flowers, including poppies and violets. Although a 2016 earthquake left the village virtually uninhabitable, some residents have re-opened shops and restaurants for visitors.

Monsaraz 🗡️

With its imposing castle and stunning hilltop setting, Monsaraz is a picturesque gem. Situated just across from the Spanish border in Portugal, Monsaraz boasts white-washed houses that delightfully contrast with the surrounding countryside's greens and browns. Historically strategic, it has seen rule by Romans, Visigoths, Moors, and Knights Templar.

Dinant 🏰

Located on the banks of the River Meuse in the French-speaking region of Wallonia, Belgium, Dinant is famous for its striking Citadel constructed in the 19th century. The citadel offers sweeping views of the landscape below. You can reach it by climbing several hundred steps or taking a cable car. Don't miss the attached museum with its collection of medieval arms and regional art.

Trogir 🏖️

One of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe, Trogir is situated on the Adriatic coast in southern Croatia. The 15th-century walls encircle narrow, winding streets, Venetian-style Cathedrals, and beautiful 15th-century town hall. Closer to the coast, you can relax on beautiful beaches or dine overlooking the clear blue water.

Lauterbrunnen 💧

The picturesque valley of Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland is home to 72 waterfalls, the most famous being Staubbach Falls that drops nearly a thousand feet. With sheer cliffs and sparkling falls framing the valley, it is a nature lover’s dream with plenty of hiking trails, mountain bike paths, and rock climbing routes to explore.

Albarracin 🕌

Named after a Moorish leader, Albarracin in east-central Spain is a picture-perfect town. Much of its early architecture remains, including the Cathedral and city walls from the 12th to 14th centuries. The town’s pink buildings are built right into the natural landscape, offering a maze of cobbled streets and rose-colored buildings to explore.

Gordes ⛪

Nestled on a plateau overlooking the Luberon, Gordes is one of France's prettiest villages. It is famous for picturesque gray and white stone buildings lining the hill to a church and castle at the top. Don't miss the “bones” or round stone huts used by ancient shepherds and the Abbey where monks still make liquors and lavender essence.

Mostar 🌉

Located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mostar is renowned for its Old Bridge over the Neretva River. Built in 1556 and destroyed in 1993, it was restored and remains a symbol of resilience. Mostar is best experienced overnight, as the crowds disappear, and the cobbled streets come alive with restaurants and lights.

Portree 🌊

On Scotland’s Isle of Skye, Portree is a remote spot overlooking Loch Portree. Known for its brightly colored houses standing steps away from Shingle Beach and calm harbor waters, getting to Portree by ferry is part of the adventure.
